Allegory of Peace and War, painted by Pompeo Batoni in 1776, presents a powerful meeting between two opposing forces. Mars, the Roman god of war, appears in gleaming armour with his sword held firmly before him. Beside him, the graceful figure of Peace reaches toward his weapon while holding an olive branch between them.
Rather than showing a violent struggle, Batoni creates a scene of quiet persuasion. Peace leans toward Mars with calm confidence, and the god of war appears to pause under her influence. Their close eye contact gives the composition an emotional intensity that is both dramatic and intimate.
Rich red fabric, golden armour and luminous white drapery stand out against the dark woodland background. The polished surface, elegant figures and soft expressions reveal Batoni’s Rococo refinement, while the classical subject and moral theme point toward Neoclassicism.
