It is always exciting to open the kiln for the first time and see these expressive self portrait tiles․ The advanced 3D art students studied portraiture and observation drawing with a focus on the placement of facial features and the small details that convey personality‚ mood and individuality․ These portraits were then built up with sculpted clay to create texture‚ depth and character to the faces․

Each finished tile has its own character‚ whether overtly dramatic‚ quiet and contemplative‚ or frivolous․ The imperfections in the clay and glaze and the interaction between the clay body and the glaze give the portraits their individuality․ These are not the only expressive ceramic faces: there are more yet to come․
