Demetrios by American artist Carl Link was created in 1919․ It is an elegant portrayal of a male figure from the imagined ancient world of Aphrodite: A Romance of Ancient Egypt․ The figure reflects the casually considered grace of a theatrical presence in a stage setting․ The contrast between his elaborate costume‚ dominant pose‚ and multiple artifacts with a minimalist background directs the viewer’s eye toward his outline and facial expression․
Carl Link did not undertake to give any picture of the physically true ancient Mediterranean world‚ and in fact‚ he used his own early twentieth-century vocabulary of clothing styles‚ his own elegant lines‚ decorative color‚ and his own Art Nouveau and art deco stylings to create an archetypal theatrical fantasy․
