Free, indoors, every Wednesday afternoon from 1pm to 3pm. The next session at Westport Lake View Cafe falls on Wednesday 9 September 2026, in the cafe’s own meeting room, with the lake and the play park sitting right outside the door for whenever the children have had enough of being in.
Event Details

Inside The Meeting Room
Having a separate room rather than a corner of the cafe floor makes a real difference to how relaxed the whole thing feels, particularly with younger ones who talk at volume. Put out for the children:
- Juice and water.
- A few games.
- Art and craft supplies.
- Pool table.
Nothing is timetabled. The children chat, play, make something if they feel like it, and parents get two hours in the same room as other home educating parents. Juice and water are provided, so nothing needs to be bought, though the cafe is open around the group if anyone wants lunch or a coffee.
Because it’s on every Wednesday rather than monthly, a week missed is not much of a loss, which takes some of the pressure off a first visit.

Outside By The Lake

There’s a level footpath of roughly 1 mile right round the main lake and it handles a pushchair or a wheelchair without any bother. A play park sits near the visitor centre, with toilets and picnic space too. Westport is the largest stretch of water in the city, and there’s a smaller second lake and some woodland behind it, so plenty of birds and plenty of ground to cover if the children want to be outside for most of the afternoon.
Parking And Buses
A car park sits next to the visitor centre, run by the city council. Coming off the A500, take the Longport and Tunstall slip road onto the A5271, first exit at the mini roundabout for Davenport Street, then left into Westport Lake Road. The 94, 94A, 99 and 99A all stop on the A527 every 30 minutes and it’s a short walk in from there. Postcode for the satnav is ST6 4RZ.
