Der Erlkönig is a 1887 dark Romantic landscape painting by Julius Sergius von Klever (also Yuliy Yulyevich Klever)‚ a Russian landscape painter of Baltic German origin who was born in Dorpat (now Tartu‚ Estonia) in 1850 and died in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg‚ Russia) in 1924‚ and is part of a private collection․ The painting was shown at the Academic Berlin Art Exhibition in 1887․

It depicts the Erlkönig‚ the title character of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s poem “Erlkönig”․ The British Museum describes the Erlkönig as the main character in Goethe’s poem‚ and the painting is based on the poem’s story of a child who is threatened by the supernatural being during a night ride․ The Erlkönig was originally part of Goethe’s 1782 ballad opera Die Fischerin‚ and became especially well known through musical settings of the poem‚ notably Franz Schubert’s․
