This painting is a version of Lionel Royer ‘s large 1899 oil painting “Vercingetorix Throws Down His Arms at the Feet of Julius Caesar” (also known as “Vercingetorix Before Caesar”)‚ which depicts the Gallic chieftain Vercingetorix’s surrender after the Battle of Alesia in 52 BCE‚ an important Roman victory during Julius Caesar’s Gallic Wars․
The pose of Vercingetorix appears similar‚ in posture‚ on his white horse before the seated Caesar․ The Musée Crozatier notes while the only movements are the horse stopping and Vercingetorix throwing down his arms‚ the closed facial expressions all contribute to the drama of the scene․
On the other hand‚ Royer’s composition elevates the defeated Gauls as protagonists‚ pushing the Roman victors into the background and stressing Vercingetorix in his confrontation with Caesar․
